The ageing process

Skin ageing is divided into two categories:

1. Intrinsic ageing or chronological ageing

Chronological ageing is genetically predetermined. As we age, the production of collagen is reduced, the dermis (deeper layers of skin) loses its ability to attract and retain water, the dermal-epidermal junction flattens and the production of oil is decreased. The above conditions lead to thin, dry, saggy skin and to the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Although chronological ageing varies from person to person, it starts at the age of about 25, with first sings being apparent in our 30s.

 2. Extrinsic ageing or photoageing

Extrinsic ageing or photoageing is the effect that exposure to the sun and other environmental factors has in our skin. Photoageing accelerates chronological ageing, making us look older than we really are. UV radiation, cigarette smoking and environmental pollution cause oxidative stress that deteriorates skin proteins such as collagen and elastin and epidermal cell renewal slows down.

The clinical signs of photoaging are saggy skin, fine lines and wrinkles, age spots and uneven skin color, spider veins, rough skin, blotchy complexion etc

These clinically active ingredients, due to their very small molecular weight, can penetrate the stratum corneum and reach the lower layers of epidermis getting even into dermis, obtaining in this way the expected results.

The means

Pure hyaluronic acid of very low molecular weight:

Hyaluronic acid is available in the global market in different molecular weights: High (1500 kDa), medium (800kDa), low (300kDa) and very low (up to 50kDa). The lower the molecular weight, the greater the penetration and its benefits.

Philab uses hyaluronic acid of very low molecular weight (10-20kDa) in order to be able to penetrate in the lower layers of the epidermis, even in the dermis. The result is deep hydration, improvement of skin elasticity and wrinkles reduction.

 

Peptides:

Peptides are small chains of amino acids, designed to penetrate the skin, carrying specific messages to skin cells. They perform various biological functons, like the stimulation of the production of all types of skin related collagen (I, III, IV, VII , XVII), the strengthening of the dermal-epidermal junction, the activation of cell renewal, the protection of cells and DNA, etc.
